Barcode scanning vs photo scanning: which should you use?
WellPlated supports three ways to log a meal: photo scanning, barcode scanning, or typing a description.
When to use barcode scanning
Barcode scanning is best for packaged foods. It pulls directly from product data, so it tends to be the most precise method for branded products.
When to use photo scanning
Photo scanning is the most flexible method. It works for restaurant meals, home-cooked food and anything without a barcode.
When to type a description
Manual description works well when scanning isn't convenient, or when you want to be specific about a home-cooked meal.
Accuracy
All nutrition data from photo scanning and manual description is an estimate. WellPlated is designed to give you a useful approximation — not laboratory-grade precision.
